Our workshops include presentations from professionals with many years of experience in the investigation, assessment and the evaluation of child custody, child maltreatment, and domestic violence cases from the mental health, criminal justice, and legal perspectives.
Linda Barnard, Ph.D. has run a private practice in Sacramento since 1981, where she provides consultation to individuals, businesses and agencies. She specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders and trauma survivors. Ms. Barnard regularly speaks at conferences and participates in training professionals in mental health and allied fields. She testifies often as an expert witness on a number of trauma and abuse related issues.
Stephanie Dallam, R.N., M.S., F.N.P. is the Research Associate for the Leadership Council For Mental Health, Justice & The Media. She formerly worked as a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatric Surgery and Trauma at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and before this was a member of the faculty at the University of Missouri, where she taught nurse practitioner students at the graduate level. She is also the Legal/Legislative Editor for the Family Violence & Sexual Assault Bulletin. She has written numerous articles and book chapters on issues related to the welfare of children, and presents regularly at national conferences.
Richard Ducote, Esq. is the country's leading attorney in the area of sexual abuse litigation. Since 1978 he has successfully advocated on behalf of victims of domestic violence, sexually abused children, and the parents who fight to protect them, in over 40 states. His victories include Ankenbrandt v. Richards in the Supreme Court, which allowed child victims of incest to sue their perpetrators in federal court despite 100 years of cases to the contrary. He has won multi million dollar verdicts for abuse victims in 3 states. He has been honored for his work by the National Association of Social Workers, the American Bar Association, the Northern Plains Tribal Institute, the LSU School of Social Work, and Justice For Children.
Vincent J. Felitti, M.D. is the Director and founder of the California Institutes of Preventive Medicine, a non-profit medical corporation founded to improve the physical and emotional health of Californians by making preventive medicine widely available to all. Dr. Felitti founded the Department of Preventive Medicine for Kaiser Permanente in San Diego 26 years ago, and served as Chief of Preventive Medicine until March 2001. Under his leadership, the Health Appraisal Division of the Department of Preventive Medicine provided Comprehensive Medical Evaluation to over one million patients. Dr. Felitti and his team found that abusive childhood experiences were surprisingly commonplace, and are common denominators underlying many chronic medical problems later in life. The Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACE, Study showed that there is a powerful link between adverse childhood experiences and adult health state decades after.
Meera Fox, Esq. represented juvenile wards of the Dependency court as an attorney for Children's Law Offices before becoming a successful sole practitioner representing Protective Parents of sexually abused children in Family Court custody proceedings. After a three-year stint as director of new programs at the Child Abuse Forensic Institute, Ms. Fox now serves as the Executive Director of Child Abuse Solutions, Inc. Ms. Fox regularly speaks at conferences and trains professionals on various aspects of child abuse and the law.
Robert Geffner, Ph.D., A.P.B.N. is the founder of the Family Violence & Sexual Assault Institute, and President of Alliant International University’s Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma. These organizations provide state-of-the-art professional training and publications, and also sponsor one of the most important international conferences annually on Family Violence. Dr. Geffner is a Clinical Research Professor of Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology, Alliant International University, San Diego, and currently serves as Acting Director of Alliant's Center of Forensic Studies. He is the executive editor of the Family Violence & Sexual Assault Bulletin, and Editor-in-Chief of the Haworth Maltreatment and Trauma Press. He is a licensed psychologist and a licensed Marriage and Family therapist. Dr. Geffner has authored and edited numerous books, chapters, and articles concerning family violence, child maltreatment, forensic psychology, child custody, and neuropsychology. He has a Diplomate in Clinical Neuropsychology, and was an adjunct faculty member for the National Judicial College for over ten years.
Seth Goldstein, Esq. is the founder and Executive Director of the Child Abuse Forensic Institute. Presently a consultant and attorney in private practice, he has in the past served as the investigator and project director for the Child Abuse Vertical Prosecution Unit of the Napa County D.A.'s Office, and as an investigator with the Santa Clara County D.A's office. He was a police officer for 10 years prior to that. He is the author of a textbook on Sexual Abuse investigation and testifies as an expert witness as well as trains professionals all over the country.
Hon. Sol Gothard, J.D., M.S.W., A.C.S.W. was elected to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal for the State of Louisiana in 1986, where he continues to serve as Senior Judge. He was formerly Chief Judge of the Juvenile Court, Parish of Jefferson, Louisiana, for 14 years. Prior to being elected as a judge in 1972, Hon. Gothard practiced law for over ten years. Before this he was a social worker for 16 years. Judge Gothard has participated as a lecturer, workshop leader, and keynote speaker in numerous international, national and regional conferences and professional training workshops. His has authored many articles and chapters on issues concerning abused children and the role of social workers in family and juvenile courts. He teaches as a full professor at Tulane University Graduate School of Social Work, and also has two internet courses, available through Tulane University.
Karen Hawthorne, Ph.D. has an independent practice in Santa Ysabel, California, where she does psychodiagnostics and counseling with children, adolescents, couples and families. She also provides clinical supervision, educational consultation, and community psychology, and is a nationally certified provider of Family Life Education. Dr. Hawthorne is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and serves as an Adjunct Professor of Graduate Studies at California School of Professional Psychology, Alliant International University in San Diego, as well as at California Community Colleges. She is a mental health consultant to several Indian reservations, Head Start programs, schools, and community resource centers. She is the author of numerous articles and has done professional training on issues of trauma and child sexual and physical abuse, memory, and the effects of trauma on learning.
Hon. Eugene Hyman, J.D. has served as a Judge of the Superior Court of California for the County of Santa Clara since his election to that office in November 1996. Prior to that he served as a Judge of the Municipal Court. In 1999, with the assistance of the Juvenile Probation Department, Judge Hyman started the Juvenile Delinquency Domestic and Family Violence Court, believed to be the first of its type in the country. Judge Hyman has lectured and presented on domestic violence related topics in Canada, Australia, and numerous conferences in the United States. He has been a Lecturer at the University of Santa Clara School of Law for seventeen years. Judge Hyman has served as Chair of the Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Council's Court Systems Sub-committee, and as a member of the board of the Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Council. He has written extensively on domestic violence prevention related topics for professional journals and newspapers, and has appeared on "Nightline," "Good Morning America," "60 Minutes," and "The Montel Williams Show" to discuss issues of domestic violence and juveniles.
Megan Lehmer, Ph.D., L.C.S.W. is an expert on child abuse who has been counseling families and children for over thirty years. She is an adjunct faculty member at the Wright Institute and is the President-elect of the San Francisco Psychological Association, where she chairs a study group devoted to Best Practices in Child Custody Evaluations. An evaluator for San Francisco and Marin counties since the early 1990's, Dr. Lehmer is known for her work in cross cultural assessment and conducts psychological testing for other child custody evaluators.
Geraldine Butts Stahly, Ph.D. is a Professor of Psychology at California State University, San Bernardino. She has conducted research, authored many articles and chapters, and has served as a consultant to, and provided training on victim dynamics to the National College of District Attorneys, the CA District Attorney’s Association, The CA Department of Parole, the CA State Bar, the CA Judicial Council, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. Defense Department. She conducted one of the original research studies concerning domestic violence in custody cases in California, and is currently involved in the latest study on child sexual abuse allegations in California custody cases. Dr. Stahly chaired a national task force on child custody issues for the American Psychological Association (APA), and was also a member of the APA’s Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family.
Joyanna Silberg, Ph.D. is the Coordinator of Trauma Disorder Services for Children at Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and past president of the International Society for the Study of Dissociation. In addition to her role as a clinician, Dr. Silberg is an Associate Editor for The Journal of Trauma and Dissociation, and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Trauma Practice. She is the recipient of distinguished awards for outstanding research contributions and clinical excellence. She is the editor of The Dissociative Child (Sidran Press, 1996/1998) and co-editor of the book Misinformation Concerning Child Sexual Abuse and Adult Survivors (Haworth Press, 2002), and author of approximately 20 professional articles and chapters. She has presented at hundreds of professional conferences and conducts training workshops around the world on the treatment of traumatized and dissociative children. |
